Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) is your typical weedy grass and is commonly found in Salt Lake Valley. It is a perennial bunchgrass. Bunchgrasses grow in clumps (see photo). It is native to Eurasia but now is widespread throughout North America. I think of this grass as an awkward teenager, the way it flowers at odd, gawky angles.
This grass feels loose or not compact; when you squeeze the stem, there is extra room in there. It also has a large membranous ligule (see photo).
