On the 23rd of February, I saw my first Crocus in SLC.
There are many species of Crocus, so I will not try to identify these plants to species, only to the genus.
Fun Crocus Fact: Saffron comes from the stigma of Crocus sativus. The stigma is the part of a flower where pollen lands.
Crocuses are in the Family Iridaceae, or the Iris Family. Hence, these plants are monocots, with flower parts in multiples of three (Crocuses have 6 petals, ect). Their leaves are grass-like, which you can see in the photo below. Most species also have a white strip where there is no chlorophyll down the middle of the leaf.
I love these flowers because to me they mean that spring is around the corner!
